Quite often in SWTOR I got the feeling that the bad guys didn’t really comprehend what they were up against. I’d consider it rather foolish to be so defiant towards someone who has killed every minion they had. Of course it wouldn’t make much of a game if after level 20 or so everyone would just surrender, but it doesn’t stop me from having a laugh at their silly defeat-destined existence.
I did enjoy SWTOR for the two months I played it, I really did. Two months of an MMO is a lot for me. I only played Rift for two weeks. SWTOR is a solid game and it manages to make the leveling up a nice and interesting experience, where in many other games it’s the necessary evil. However, it’s still just an MMO. I don’t think I’ve ever loved a static game, and probably never will. Most MMO worlds are just standing there, waiting for the player to experience them, nothing will happen before you go about experiencing. That bad guy with his nefarious plan? Yeah, turns out that after he built the base and a doomsday device, he got lazy. Now he’s just waiting for someone to end his boredom. And for the love of God, can’t anyone in these worlds get something done by themselves? All the npcs are furiously incompetent, but I guess that’s just the burden of heroism. I’d rather play an MMO where I give the quests and npcs run around killing the whatevers, just don’t put a giant question mark as my hat.
I could do a little rant about the Sith names too, but I’ll just link this Penny Arcade. Loved it.
Games really need more simulation. I want more games that aren’t so focused on the player. My favorite game from the recent years must be Mount and Blade. I have played enormous amounts of it’s different versions. I like how it has it’s wars and conflicts going on without player intervention, yet allows it. I like how I can choose a side and even unchoose it later, if I so will. I guess that’s what people call betrayal.
Another rough around the edges diamond is Din’s Curse. What happens when the hero is lazy, goes to eat while standing in town or just plain sucks at heroing? Shit happens. And then people die.
